Description

Waqrapukara is an important pre-Inca and Inca ceremonial center, located in the Acomayo province of the Cuzco department, what is most striking is the peculiar rocky formation at the top that resembles the horns of a bull, its name comes from the Quechua "Waqra" which means horn and "Pukara" which means fortress, therefore its name would mean fortress of the horns or horned fortress, but in pre-Hispanic times there were still no cows in America, so its original name must have been Llamapukara, which suggests that the horns are actually llama ears.
Come with us and learn about the history of this fascinating and enigmatic place, the tour is by bus to the nearest town, then a walk, enjoying the landscape surrounded by the vegetation and if we are lucky we can see some condors and vicuñas.

Itinerary

Full day tour: Cusco- Community of Huayki - Waqrapukara - Community of Huayki – Cusco

We start the tour very early, between 4 and 4:30, we will go to your hotel to pick you up and then board the bus heading to the community of Huayki in the province of Acomayo to the south west of the city of Cusco, and on the way we will make a brief stop for breakfast.
We will arrive at the community of Huayki between 7 and 8 am and after a brief introduction by the guide about the place we will start the walk for approximately 3 hours, the walk will take us some physical effort, we will walk surrounded by vegetation and fauna, if we are lucky we will be able to see in the distance some vicuñas or condors flying over the area, which would be a plus in our experience.
After 3 hours of hiking we will be in Waqrapukara, the guide will give us a brief explanation of the place and we will exchange some ideas, then we will visit the place and have enough time to take photos and explore the surroundings, finally we will taste, if it is the case, a Box lunch or we will make a stop at a local restaurant in the Cusipata district and then start the way back to the community of Huayki using the same path, in Huayki we will board our bus again and return to the city of Cusco, end of the tour.

Recommendations

The reservation must be made at least 4 days in advance.
The community of Huayki and waqrapukara are over 13 thousand feet altitud. The walk is moderate difficulty, it covers about 12 kilometers, so it is not recommended for people with some type of disability, respiratory or heart problems or any medical condition that prevents physical effort.
It is also not recommended in case of symptoms of altitude sickness, we recommend waiting a few days, and drinking more liquids and coca tea, after a few days of acclimatization you can make the tour without problems.
The excursion is not canceled due to weather problems, so you will have to take measures in case of traveling in the rainy season.

What to bring

Take a small backpack with you to carry what your needs such as personal documents, sunglasses, sunscreen, and some bottles of water.
You should wear warm and light clothing appropriate for hiking, also suitable footwear for hiking, a hat for the sun, optional you can bring you own trekking poles
Bring a rain coat with you if you travel between October and April.
Take some local money with you for any unforeseen events like buying extra bottles of water.
